Real Talk:Session 1
This is a personal perspective that I hope will help emerging artist in their quest for success. (1)Respect other people talent, dreams & drive. If you don't personally like their music or them, thats cool.So what. Respect their hustle, time, investment & supporters.Disrespect is petty & dangerous,a simple matter can be blown out of context."Don't start none, won't be none".You want to make a "dis" record, keep the 'beef' on wax & under control. (2)Build & maintain relationships with DJ's.Yes I know, there are a lot' funnystyle'-conflict of interest 'persons'-don't return emails-charging fees-general f***ery.Keep searching. And when you find them, show support! Even when your music ain't in the mix everytime. If they took the time to play your music & spin you on the regular, show some love.Don't get all 'uppity'.Downtown skyscrapper with receptionist or basement studio with moms upstairs, everybody starts somewhere & karma is real. (3)Facts: 99% of all albums in itunes never sell a copy. 77% of all 'tweets' get ignored. (4).Designate some of your music "promotional" & submit to record pools or email them direct to DJ's.Why? 'Permission of Use' issues. Credible, consistent DJ's use promotional music to help, not hurt, the sale of upcoming music.A lot of times, whole albums are designated 'promo'.Instead of selling the album per unit, artists use the 'free' release as leverage for show bookings, appearences, collab projects. (5)Mixtapes: If you & your people are on a cd/compilation,nobody outside your camp is on it & it has 20-30 songs? That's an Album ,call it what it is & get your money($19.99 not $3.99).A artist mixtape promo should not have more than 10-12 songs. If whoever you are trying to get signed to or have invest in you can't make a decision after listening to 10 songs? Your wasting your time, energy and music trying to negotiate with them or turn them into a supporting fan(i.e. buy your music-promote & support your movement) Keep Searching-It Don't Stop-Hustle Hard!
